Oils: Behind the Breakout

Oils: Behind the Breakout

Behind the Breakout

Menteath is a premium collection of oil-based, scent led products, designed to replicate the sebum we lose over time. Sebum is oil that is produced from the sebaceous gland located in the mid-dermis and almost always develops alongside a hair follicle. It is crucial for maintaining our skin's healthy, plump glow and we need lots of it as we get older! Those with oily-prone skin often face challenges, however, oily skin also has some advantages and can be managed effectively with the right approach.

Concerned About Breakouts?

It's understandable to feel anxious about using oil-based products on oily skin, especially with concerns about breakouts and increased oiliness. Here are some tips to help manage that anxiety and make informed decisions.

Why Do Breakouts Happen?

Breakouts are often caused by hormonal imbalances rather than the oils themselves. When you experience a breakout after using an oil based product, it’s natural to avoid oils in the future. However, it’s important to remember that the reaction might be due to specific ingredients in the product, and skin sensitivity due to changes in hormones, rather than the oil as a carrier. If you are not used to using oils, and are prone to oily skin, we feel you. It can feel uncomfortable at first, but we believe that there will be the right oil for you.

Common misconceptions about the reason we have breakouts with oil-based products include clogging pores, increasing sebum production (yes please!), trapping in heat causing sweat, and of course allergic reactions and general irritations that we may get with any new product we introduce to our skin that might not be right for us.

We have been working with various skins over the last 4 years in our treatment rooms. We know that using oil-based products do not necessarily cause an increase in sebum production, but it can have varying effects depending on your skin type and the specific oils used. Here are some factors to consider:

  1. Skin Type: People with oily skin may experience an increase in sebum production when using heavy or comedogenic oils. This can create a feedback loop where the skin feels the need to produce more oil to compensate for the added oils on the surface.

Recommendation for light oil: Menteath Facial Oils – they are lightweight, fast absorbing, protective, and high in nutritional value.

  1. Oil Type: Not all oils are created equal. Some oils can mimic the skin’s natural sebum (like jojoba oil) and may actually help balance sebum production. In contrast, heavier oils (like olive oil) may potentially lead to increased oil production as the skin tries to compensate for the occlusive barrier created making it perfect for mature/dry skin.

Recommendation for heavy oil: Menteath Body Rituals – they have a thicker consistency, can be used on the face as a night treatment, create a perfect protective barrier, and deeply hydrating on dry skin.

  1. Skin Barrier Function: Oils that support and strengthen the skin barrier can help maintain healthy sebum levels. If the skin barrier is compromised, the skin may produce more sebum to try and protect itself.

Recommendation for skin nutrition and protection: Menteath Facial Cleansers, packed with vitamins and omega fatty acids, protects without stripping the sebum, balances the skin, light and gentle while dissolving dirt, pollution, and even waterproof makeup.

  1. Individual Reaction: Everyone’s skin is unique, and individuals may react differently to the same product. What causes an increase in sebum production for one person might not have the same effect on another.

Balancing Sebum Production

To manage sebum production and avoid potential breakouts:

  • Choose Non-Comedogenic Oils: Choose the Menteath Facial oils as they are light and fast absorbing without compromising on nutrition.
  • Patch Test: Before buying a full Menteath product, try our Discovery sets and start using to see how it feels. You can always apply lighter amount at first, and then gradually build it up so your skin has a chance to get used to it.
  • Moderation: If you love Menteath Body Rituals, which is a slightly thicker oil, use it sparingly if you have oily or acne-prone skin. A little goes a long way.
  • Moisturise Properly: Ensure your skin is well-hydrated with appropriate moisturisers, as dehydrated skin can sometimes produce more oil to compensate.

By choosing the right products and monitoring how your skin reacts, you can help maintain a healthy balance of sebum production.

For those who are extremely sensitive to oils, here is our guide to introducing oils safely into your skincare routine.

Try introducing one oil at a time. This approach helps identify any specific oil that might be causing a reaction, or whether it is the oil itself.

Recommendations for Sensitive Skin

If you have sensitivity to oil-based products, start with lighter oils that are rich in nutrients:

  • Sweet Almond Oil
  • Jojoba Oil

Both are gentle on the skin and less likely to cause breakouts.
