NOCTURNE is a day and evening of film, light, sound, scent, movement, food and making, held in the garden at The Woodshed, Menteath’s home in Hamsey.
Created by Flick Stuart-Menteath alongside a group of artists, makers, practitioners and friends, NOCTURNE brings together many of the things that have shaped Menteath beyond skincare: landscape, memory, ritual, community, the elements and our complicated relationship with the natural world.
Come for an hour or stay into the evening. Entry is free and you do not need to book to visit NOCTURNE. A small number of workshops, treatments and tastings have limited capacity and can be booked separately.

As evening arrives, the garden transforms.
Premiere of "Beautifully Damaged" by Adrian Peckitt x Menteath
At the centre of NOCTURNE is the premiere of Beautifully Damaged, a new moving image work by Felicity Stuart-Menteath and Adrian Peckitt, with music written, performed and produced by Nava Kazemi.
Beautifully Damaged explores the marks left by experience on people, landscapes, memory and our understanding of home, not simply as a place, but as a sense of safety, shelter and belonging.
Moving between humanitarian archive, nature, ritual, making and the manufactured ideals of the beauty industry, the film considers our instinct to control, consume, repair and perfect, and what happens when we begin to see beauty differently.
Human intervention in the landscape becomes control.
The beauty industry becomes perfection.
Products, materials and waste become consumption.
Humanitarian rebuilding becomes repair.
Menteath exists somewhere complicated between all four, making within consumer culture while questioning our relationship with consumption, nature, beauty and what we actually need.
Ultimately, the film returns to the land, imperfect, worked, weathered and alive, and to the things that make us feel safe within it.
Created from archive film, photography, personal footage and new material, Beautifully Damaged will be projected at The Woodshed as part of the wider NOCTURNE installation.
Through the Day
From midday, the garden becomes a place to spend time rather than simply pass through.
Across both Saturdays there will be gentle movement, breathwork and sound experiences, alongside seated garden massage with Clare and Yolanda.
Some experiences have limited capacity and need to be booked in advance, but you do not need a booking to come to NOCTURNE itself.
Come to move, listen, experience the work, have a drink or simply find somewhere in the garden to sit for a while.

Adrian Peckitt
Photographer, filmmaker, friend and co-creator of Beautifully Damaged, Adrian Peckitt will also be exhibiting a selection of his photographic work at NOCTURNE.
Selected prints will be available to purchase during the exhibition.
Adrian is also the photographer behind Menteath’s latest body of imagery, continuing an ongoing creative collaboration around landscape, material, body and place.
From Puglia to Hamsey
We’ll be joined by Savino of Giannella Olive Oil, founder and grower of the Puglian olive oil used in Menteath’s Smoked Bay Body Ritual.
Flick has worked alongside Savino during the olive harvest in Puglia, experiencing first hand the landscape, trees and process behind an ingredient that eventually finds its way back to Hamsey and into Menteath.
For NOCTURNE, Savino will host a series of small complimentary olive oil tastings, giving you the chance to taste the oil in its original form and meet the person behind it.

For the first evening of NOCTURNE, we’ll also be joined by Theo, who you may know as one of he founding members of Michellin Reviewed Restaurant, Dill, in Lewes. Theo will create a small series of sweet and savoury bites in response to the exhibition of light.
Working with the movement between black and white, changing colour and different intensities, Theo will translate some of the visual language of the installation into food.
Three to five small bites will move between sweet and savoury, developed specifically around the ideas within the work and designed to be eaten standing in the garden as the exhibition unfolds.
Rather than a separate dining experience, food becomes another part of NOCTURNE alongside film, light, sound and scent.

FyrFly
The FyrFly horsebox bar will be with us throughout the day and into the evening, serving local beers and wines alongside cocktails and mocktails made with homegrown herbs and botanicals.
Grab a drink, find somewhere to sit and stay for the shift from afternoon into evening.
Menteath
NOCTURNE takes place at the home of Menteath, surrounded by the landscape in which much of the brand has developed.
Menteath skincare and scent will be available to experience throughout the day, alongside some of the ingredients, processes and people behind what we make.
NOCTURNE isn't intended as a conventional brand event. It is an opportunity to open up the wider world behind Menteath and explore the experiences, contradictions and relationships with nature that continue to shape it.
You do not need to book to come along.
Getting Here
Hamsey is a very small rural village, so please walk or cycle where possible.
There will be a field available for visitor parking before you enter the village itself and we ask that you do not drive over Hamsey bridge looking for parking, as access needs to remain clear for residents and the working farms around.
Parking will be sign posted for those who drive, followed by a short 2 minute walk to The Woodshed. Please park carefully and considerately and follow any signage in place on the day. Unfortunately, if it has rained heavily in the days leading up to the event, we may not be able to offer the field fr parking.
